Completed by home-and community-based raters, the HCSBS provides integrated, comprehensive ratings of both social skills and antisocial problem behaviors.

The HCSBS includes two, co-normed scales:

  1. Social Competence — 32 items that measure adaptive, prosocial skills on two subscales:
    1. Peer Relations
    2. Self-Management/Compliance
  2. Antisocial Behavior — 32 items that measure socially-linked problem behaviors on two subscales:
    1. Defiant/Disruptive
    2. Antisocial-Aggressive

The HCSBS was standardized with a national sample of ratings of 1,562 children and adolescents ages 5-18. The norm sample closely approximates the 2000 U.S. Census in terms of gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status and special education participation. Raw scores are converted to T-scores, percentile ranges and descriptive Social Functioning Levels. Internal consistency reliability of the HCSBS is .96 to .98 for the two total scale scores, and .94 for the four subscales. Test-retest reliablity of the HCSBS at 1-2 week intervals has been documented at .84 for the Social Competence scale and .92 for the Antisocial Behavior scale total scores. Inter-rater reliability coefficients for mother and father rating the same child have been documented at .86 for the Social Competence total score, and .71 for the Antisocial Behavior total score. Extensive validity evidence for the HCSBS is documented in the Manual. The HCSBS Kit includes the Manual and 25 Rating Forms.
