The Pediatric Behavior Rating Scale (PBRS) identifies symptoms associated with severe emotional dysregulation, including early-onset bipolar disorder.

Identifies symptoms associated with severe emotional dysregulation,
including early-onset bipolar disorder.
Richard M. Marshall, Ph. D. and Berney J. Wilkinson, Ph. D.

  • Age: 3-18 years
  • Time:   Approximately 15-20 minutes
  • Restricted Use: Level B or S

The PBRS is a standardized, norm-referenced parent and teacher rating scale that identifies symptoms such as mood swings; chronic irritability; grandiosity; explosive outbursts, and emotional meltdowns, which are associated with severe emotional dysregulation.  It also differentiates comorbid disorders, such as ADHD, that have similar symptoms and behavioral characteristics.

The PBRS uses two Response Booklets–a Parent Version and a Teacher Version–to provide information about symptoms and behavioral characteristics at home and at school.  Rather than providing a clinical diagnosis, the PBRS focuses on symptom identification, and analysis of items and profiles.

The PBRS normative sample included 541 parents and 610 teachers of children ages 3-18 years, which was well-matched to the U.S. population for age and gender.  In addition to the normative sample, data was colleted on a combined clinical sample of 224 parents and 194 teachers of children 3-18 years. Five specific clinical groups made up this sample: Bipolar Disorder, ADHD, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Conduct Disorder and Pervasive Developmental Disorder.

PBRS Computerized Scoring Program
The PBRS Scoring Program (PBRS-SP) provides unlimited scoring and report generation for the Parent and Teacher Response Booklets.  After demographic information and raw scores are manually entered, the PBRS-SP generates a Score Report that includes a Scale Summary Table, an Inconsistency Score Table and a Scale Description Table.  It also includes a Critical Items Table, which efficiently reviews individual Critical Items, and determines areas requiring follow-up evaluation. The Report provides both T-Score and Percentile Profiles.

The program enables the user to overlay profiles on-screen for the same individual (parent/teacher profiles, teacher/teacher profiles, parent/parent profiles).  Client data can be exported to many spreadsheet and date base programs, and client reports can be exported to common word processing programs.

Requires Windows 2000/XP/Vista; NTFS file system; CD-ROM dive for installation, internet connection or telephone for software activation. PBRS-SP is not included with the PBRS Kit, and must be ordered separately, or as part of the Combination Kit.

The PBRS Kit includes 25 each of the Reusable Parent Item Booklets, Reusable Teacher Item Booklets, Parent Response Booklets, Teacher Response Booklets Parent Score Summary/Profile Forms and Teacher Score Summary/Profile Forms and a Manual. The PBRS/PBRS-SP Combination Kit includes the PBRS Kit and the PBRS-SP CD-ROM.
