Test of Information Processing Skills (TIPS) quickly and reliably assesses visual and auditory memory/sequencing with delayed retrieval and semantic level analysis of understanding to provide information on how letter sequences are processed

A quick, reliable measure of how well letter strings are processed.
Raymond E. Webster, Ph. D.

  • Age Range: 5 years through adult
  • Time: 30 minutes

TIPS assesses visual and auditory memory/sequencing. Processing is assessed in two modalities (Visual and Auditory), and three recall conditions, using strings of two to nine, non-rhyming letters. Although TIPS began as part of the Learning Efficiency Test, it features new subtests (Delayed Recall and Word Fluency), new scoring procedures and new national norms.

TIPS Performance Relates to:
*Executive Function
*Working Memory
*Auditory/Visual Processing
*Learning/Retaining/Organizing/ Using New Information

TIPS Assesses:
*How a person processes information that is seen or heard
*How much information is retained (short term, working memory and delayed recall)
*How it is retained (in sequence, or scrambled)
*Effects of interference on recall
*Semantic fluency

TIPS Subtests
Visual and Auditory Modality
*Letter Strings presented, with letters recalled immediately. Recalled after interference task (counting), then recalled after a longer interference task (repeating a sentence)
*Scores differentiate sequenced vs non-sequenced recall (letters recalled in the exact sequence presented vs out of sequence)
*Error analysis provides measures of Acoustic Intrusion and Proactive Interference effects.

Delayed Recall Subtest

*Animal or fruits from the Interference sentences are recalled

Semantic Fluence Subtest
*Word lists generated orally, within one-minute spans
*Word lists written within one-minute spans

Administration and Scoring
The TIPS Protocol provides a detailed summary of how the individual processes new information, presented visually or auditorily. The easy-to-use format facilitates score calculations. The TIPS Scoring Tutorial, provided in the Manual, describes scoring procedures, and includes a Practice Exercise with an Annotated Key. Sequential and non-sequential scores are obtained; standard scores and percentile ranks are provided.

The TIPS Test Kit includes a Manual, Test Plates and 25 Protocols.
