Identifies, describes and quantifies mathematical deficits in school-age children.

The TOMA-3 is an easily-administered, norm-referenced assessment tool to identify students who are significantly behind their peers in mathematical knowledge. It also determines the magnitude (below average, poor or very poor) of any mathematical problems.

Comprised of four core, and one supplemental, subtests, results are combined to form an overall Mathematical Ability Index.

TOMA-3 Subtests

• Mathematical Symbols and Concepts– a series of multiple-choice questions, relating to mathematical signs, symbol, words or phrases (replaces Vocabulary subtest)
• Computation– a series of problems, increasing in difficulty
• Mathematics in Everyday Life– multiple-choice questions relating to the use of everyday math (replaces General Information subtest)
• Word Problems– increasingly-difficult word problems
• Attitude Toward Math (supplemental)– students’ attitudes/self-perceptions regarding abilities and achievement

TOMA-3 Composite
Mathematic Ability Index– represents a broad range of features, and systems, associated with mathematical ability. It is highly reliable, because it is composed of more than one subtest. This score has neither floor nor ceiling effects.

The updated TOMA-3 Manual contains extensive information on the content of the subtests, and substantially more technical information than previous editions. Numerous validity studies, including sensitivity, specificity and ROC/AUC, have been provided.

Reliability and Validity
All new normative data were collected for a demographically-representative sample of the 2011 U.S. school-age population. It was normed on 1,456 students, ages 8.0 through 18.11 years, living in 21 states. Scores are provided in Mathematical Ability Index, Age and Grade Equivalents, Subtest Scaled Scores, Percentile Ranks and SEMs.

Reliability coefficients have been computed by age, and subgroup, within the normative sample (i.e., male, female; White, Black/African American, Hispanic, Asian/Pacific Islander, American Indian, gifted and talented, ADHD and mathematical learning disability) as well as for the entire normative sample

The TOMA-3 Kit includes 25 each of the Student Response Booklets and Examiner Record Forms, and Manual.
